ESL PEDAGOGIES
There are many challenges around delivering the Australian Curriculum to ESL learners and support is heavily needed if all participants are to succeed within their schooling.
Intercultural PedagogyIn the Northern Territory, the vast majority of students in very remote areas are all ESL students.
Teaching in these contexts requires informed ESL pedagogy and intercultural approaches. Adhering to this, a Working in Teams approach is recommended. This ensures intercultural pedagogy and home language are implemented within the learning. This can be achieved by having Assistant Teachers work together with the classroom teacher ensuring the English language and cultural knowledge are integrated within learning areas to access the whole curriculum. ESL Secondary LearnersI have found this document to be incredibly helpful in trying to understand the different levels of ESL learners, to assist with the planning of lessons and how to assess students. This enabled me to understand the levels of language students had before setting them goals within the Australian Curriculum.
This document demonstrates how all learners new to ESL are mapped against Listening and Speaking outcomes, commencing at Beginning Level L1. ESL Beginning Level 3 is part of the learning journey for ESL learners who are not literate in their first language. Once learners demonstrate achievement of Beginning Level 3, they should be mapped against Level 2 of the NT ESL Outcomes. |

The Australian CurriculumThe Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) have developed the English as an Additional Language or Dialect Teacher Resource kit to support teachers as they develop teaching and learning programs in the Australian Curriculum: Foundation to Year 10 with EAL/D students.
